“If the student is taught that fundamentally he is one with all his brethren all over the world, that in fact he shares the same soul with the crawling worm, the creeping insect, the cooing bird and the barking beast, we would effectively sow the seeds of peace and harmony, and not until then…” —Swami Sivananda
To live in harmony with our planet, we must first change our perceptions and begin to understand the interdependent relationship between ourselves and the environment. We need to see everything — earth, cosmos, sun, soil, worm, bee, as well as each other — with “new eyes.” This course will explore the connection between modern ecology, environmental activism, and the ancient Vedic tradition. We will study teachings in spiritual ecology from many different traditions, including the Prithvi Sukhta, the Vedic Hymn to the Earth, of the Atharva Veda that emphasize the importance of environmental protection for the survival and sustainability of humanity and all species. Come explore how to become part of a sacred earth community by remembering the ecological truth that we are a part of, not apart from, Earth.
