Course Details

This course is designed to train yoga teachers and practitioners to be peace leaders in local, national and international communities. Participants will learn how to lead and take part in significant humanitarian efforts. They will study the eight United Nations millennium goals and will be guided to develop skills for building programs to support these goals: eradicating poverty and hunger, providing education for all, empowering women and gender equality, providing health care for all, decreasing childhood mortality, promoting maternal health, controlling the spread of HIV and other diseases, and protecting the environment. Participants will also enjoy lectures and workshops by presenters in the Yoga for Peace Symposium which takes place during the same week. .

Curriculum

  • Understanding the “state of the world” and areas in need

  • Learning about people and groups who are changing the face of the earth, working for the betterment of humanity and our Mother Earth

  • Building leadership skills needed to for you to become an effective agent of change

  • Finding your passion and personal role for making a difference in society

  • Learning how to create peace initiatives and programs (such as those needed to help address the Millennium Development Goals)

  • Exploring effective groups (national and international) that you can partner with and/or join, to assist you in meeting your goals

  • Building a skill set to work with special populations (ie: yoga for children in special circumstances, disabilities, prisons, specific problem areas)

  • Developing skills in Yoga ~ “Inner Peace For Outer Peace”

Schedule

6:00 - 7:45am Morning Satsang: meditation, chanting, lecture/concert OR Silent Walk
8:00 - 10:00am

Morning Hatha Yoga Classs: asana and pranayama

10:00am Brunch
11:00 - 12noon Karma Yoga (helping in the ashram)
12:00 - 4pm Lectures, discussions, individual research and individual sessions with Dr. Elaine Valdov (with breaks)
4:00 - 6:00pm Afternoon Hatha Yoga Class (optional)
6:00pm Dinner
8:00 - 9:45pm Evening Satsang: meditation, chanting and lecture/concert

Presenter

Dr. Elaine Valdov
Dr. Elaine Valdov is the secretary general of the Youth Assembly of the U.N. and of the International Medical Assembly at the U.N. She is the president of the International Institute for a Culture of Peace and a Director of the Task Force on Women Empowerment and Gender Equality. She is the former Chairperson of the Executive Committee of NGOs affiliated with the U.N., outreaching to civil society and thousands of NGOs worldwide. She is a peace and human rights' activist, conflict resolution specialist and psychotherapist. She lectures internationally and gives guidance and consultations to individuals and groups who are looking for ways to make a difference.

Prerequisite

The course is open to all yoga teachers and practitioners.

Certification

Graduates earn certification signed by Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat and Dr. Elaine Valdov. Graduates can also earn credits toward professional degrees with the Open International University for Alternative Medicine.

Arrival and Departure

The course begins at 11:00am on April 20th and ends at 6:00pm on April 26th. Please plan to arrive at the Yoga Retreat at least one day before the start of the course and to leave at least one day after the course completion.

We recommend that you spend at least a few days in the Yoga Retreat before the start of your course. This allows your body and mind time to rest, re-energise and be nourished by the ashram environment. You can then begin your study feeling relaxed and refreshed. You may also wish to stay for some days after the end of the course to allow the learning from your study to integrate more fully into your consciousness within the supportive environment of the ashram. If you decide to arrive early and to stay longer, please register for the Yoga Vacation Program for those additional days.
