Workshop: Therapeutic Benefits of Yoga: Why Yoga Works – Part 1
It has been observed that yoga practices of asana,
pranayama, and meditation have been beneficial for medical problems. An
overview of the reasons for medical benefits of yoga, both scientifically
verified as well as yet to be investigated, will be presented.
Direct and indirect techniques for changing barriers of restriction are
well known in disciplines of manual medicine. Learn how these principles apply
to yoga practice and learn how to best make use of these principles during
practice of asana. Repatterning principles as used in Feldenkreis and
Somatics techniques are also part of asana.
Practices for
specific medical conditions will also be presented. Benefits of yoga for such
conditions as hypertension, depression, chronic pain, pulmonary disorders, sleep
disturbance, and other conditions will be discussed. The mechanisms of prana
and its relation to the development of imbalance and resolution of conditions
will also be addressed.
Evening Program: Structure and Function of Mind: Integrating Western
Psychology with Yoga
What is the relationship of mind and body? How do we think,
feel, and remember? How do we develop ourselves to attain
the intuitive knowledge of the mystics? Dr. Buegel will
integrate modern psychological models of the mind with
the ancient model of mind defined by yoga philosophy.
He will address how personality development in life occurs
in stages that lead to intuitive knowledge and superconscious states.
Models of memory and the continuing unconscious effects of memory will
also be presented. The sheaths (koshas) and the relationship of mind and
body as well as the yogic perspective on the origin of mind and soul will
also be presented.

Workshop: Therapeutic Benefits of Yoga: More Help for Specific Ailments –
Part 2
Yoga practices have many applications in medical settings for
improving one’s medical problems.
Bring your questions and learn some the techniques applied to various health
problems.
Evening Program: Consciousness and Dying
Swami Rama was very clear about the origin of a human being as
well as departure of that being from the body. He taught the practices to know
ourselves and to know our relationship to each other and with the divine.
Science offers clues to the correctness of those teachings.
December 9th
Workshop: Integrating Neuromuscular Techniques to Facilitate Flexibility in
Yoga Practice
Self applied neuromuscular therapy techniques can be easily integrated in
one’s yoga practice or as part of a class routine for yoga students.
If you have been mystified as to why some practices seem particularly difficult
or painful, and some practices seem easily performed, this is a class for you.
Learn how to facilitate the release of barriers that may have been blocking
your progress for some time. Specific self-applied neuromuscular techniques
as used in various bodywork disciplines will be taught. Areas that will be
addressed are hip opening, neck preparation for easier inverted postures,
forearm and wrist maintenance for vigorous vinyasa practice, knee maintenance,
preventing shin splints, hamstring mobilization, and iliotibial band adhesions.
For those vigorous pranayama practitioners, techniques for preventing and resolving
trigger points in abdominal and intercostal muscles will be taught. The side effects
of these techniques are expanded breath capacity and ease of performance of pranayama.
Learn the principles to enjoy a pain-free practice and lessen the trouble spots in your practice.
Evening Program:
Mystical Vision and How to Get There
Two paths of
practice for attaining the balance of mind and prana with activation of
sushumna awareness will be presented. One is based on the mastery of
consiousness as it relates to the states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.
The second relates to the balancing of ida and pingala, the left
and right channels. These paths are embodied in the mantras, aum
and aim as used in practices by the various yoga traditions of the world.
