When several people join together and practice Sankirtan [chanting the Lord’s name], a huge spiritual current, or Mahashakti, is generated. This purifies the heart of the aspirants and elevates them to the sublime heights of Divine ecstasy. —Swami Sivananda, Essence of Yoga
Devotional singing is a widespread practice in religions and spiritual traditions worldwide. In daily life and in communal celebration, people throughout time and place have given voice to the Divine through song, chant, sound, praise, in monasteries, temples, shrines, churches, ashrams, and other places of worship.
This year, we celebrate Unity in Diversity with the sacred sounds Iranian music with master musician Davod Azad, the soulful vocals of cantorial singer and Ba’alat Tefilah (prayer leader) Aviva Chernick, and the harmonies of communal sound with song leader, singer-songwriter, and choir director Maggie Wheeler, as well as kirtan in the Sivananda lineage led by senior staff of the ashram. Come sing your heart open, honor the Divine, and nourish your soul.
Join in community and experience the joy of music.
Davod Azad is a prominent master of Iranian music. Based in Tehran, Iran, he is a vocalist, composer, multi-instrumental musician, and virtuoso in several traditional instruments. His unique singing style integrates classical and modern spiritual elements, while his improvisation brings a contemporary sensibility to a traditional musical format. Few musicians from Iran have traveled and played before such diverse audiences as Davod. He has performed extensively over the last two decades in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Australia, India, Japan, Bhutan, as well as throughout Iran, with over 300 performances worldwide, including for BBC television. His album The Divan of Rumi and Bach is the first Iranian fusion with Western classical music.
Maggie Wheeler is an actress, passionate song leader, singer-songwriter, choir director and workshop facilitator. She is the cofounder of the Golden Bridge Community Choir in LA, and uses the powerful act of creating vocal harmony as a path to deep internal and interpersonal harmony. She is known worldwide for her work as an actress, most notably as the character of Janice on the hit series Friends.
Aviva Chernick has garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following as the charismatic lead singer of the twice JUNO-nominated Canadian world music group Jaffa Road. Now, her eponymous solo project reveals her stunning range in musical persona. Writing, recording, and touring an original combination of world music sung in Hebrew, Ladino, English, and French, this multilingual singer’s passionate voice blurs the lines between sacred and secular. Inspired by her work as a cantorial singer and Ba’alat Tefilah (prayer leader) and her study of the Balkan Judeo-Spanish tradition, Aviva has created a unique new sound defined by her intoxicatingly soulful vocals.
Sushri Rameshwari Devi, (Didi Ji), received training in scriptural knowledge and music from her guru Jagadguruttam Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj. Her unwavering love for God and Guru is the driving force of her enchanting voice and talks on the Vedas. Didi Ji captures the hearts of listeners through Canada and the US, inspiring devotees from all walks of life on the path of Raganuga Bhakti.
Ken Whiteley has made 30 recordings and performed all across North America over a long and varied career. He has won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Genie Award for Best Song in a Canadian film and Lifetime Achievement Awards from Folk Music Ontario and the Mariposa Folk Festival. He has lead gospel singing workshops at countless festivals and across Canada. Ken has been coming to the ashram for over a decade, always creating blessed music.
Emile Hassan Dyer is a vocalist, percussionist, vocal improviser, and storyteller. Raised in France and Senegal, he was influenced at an early age by the rhythms and music of West Africa. Emile is cofounder, with Maggie Wheeler, of the Golden Bridge Community Choir in Los Angeles, now in it’s 14th year. They also travel and teach their vocal workshop “Singing in The Stream,” inviting groups and communities to experience the healing power of joining together in song.
