“To err is human; to forgive divine.”
Learning to forgive is a profound spiritual practice — and for most people incredibly challenging. How do we find it in our hearts to forgive those who have caused us pain? Are some acts unforgivable? How can we let go of our own suffering? And if we can forgive, what changes in us?
Both science and yoga can teach us much about forgiveness. During this symposium we will view films by documentary filmmaker John Kastner about the ways in which a violent attack that affected many lives led to forgiveness and redemption. Andy and Noella Bouvier, whose daughter was nearly stabbed to death, will share their personal experiences and journey towards forgiving the perpetrator. Dr. Frederic Luskin, Director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects, will provide forgiveness research from a scientific standpoint. Swami Brahmananda will bring the yogic teachings on forgiveness to the panel.
Come learn about forgiveness through personal experiences, science, and yoga. Leave with a greater perspective on forgiveness in your own life.
John Kastner is one of Canada’s most acclaimed documentary-makers and has won four Emmys and received five Emmy nominations, more than any other individual in Canadian television. His works include Life with Murder, Four Women, Fighting Back, and The Lifer and the Lady, the story of a convicted murderer and a prison volunteer who fall in love. In 2007, he was honored by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television with its Achievement Award. He and his family have been friends of the ashram for many years.
Frederic Luskin, PhD, is Director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects and the author of the best-selling Forgive for Good and Forgive for Love. He is internationally recognized for his forgiveness work and also works as a Senior Fellow in Wellness at the Stanford University Health Center.
Andy and Noella Bouvier have been married for 38 years and have faced many of life’s tragedies, including serious health challenges. In 1999, their 22-year-old daughter, Julie, was repeatedly stabbed by a man suffering from mental illness. Since then, the Bouviers have traveled a painful journey as their Christian beliefs of forgiveness for a person they knew to be mentally ill were challenged by feelings of deep anger and unforgiveness against the man who tried to murder their beloved daughter. Their story is depicted in the documentary NCR: Not Criminally Responsible.
