“The more you reduce your needs and wants, the greater your happiness is. As babies, we came with a smiling, beautiful face. What did we do to lose that? That’s worth contemplating. Let’s become like children again. In the babies and children you see the real divinity. Who is a wise person? The one who really knows who he or she really is.

We learn from all traditions, and actively promote Unity in Diversity through interfaith and interspiritual dialog, including perspectives from science and the arts. We seek to promote outer peace in the world through inner peace, by sharing the wisdom and practices of yoga and contributing to a positive shift in consciousness on the planet. #omnamahsivaya #omshanti #ompeacepeacepeace

What a life changing experience!!! It is so far the most amazing thing I have done for myself and I would recommend it to anyone. Excellent does not even qualify for the amount of devotion, care, patience, and understanding I received from the team at the ashram. The food was truly amazing, accommodation to suit everyones budget, and I will be forever grateful for the high quality teachings and training received. This course formed my foundation to a much happier life.

Shimshai and the Diversity of Spiritual Expression

Why do you do what you do?

It’s my passion and what makes me feel most connected to the spiritual world. I greatly appreciate the practices of yoga and meditation, but sacred singing/chanting for me is always the most direct connection.

What are you currently fascinated by in your work?

I love traveling the world and seeing you so many different people from different backgrounds, lifestyles, religions, and beliefs are called to the spiritual path. And I love to see how the true spiritual path makes no judgement of character as long as one is willing and able to follow the truth.

How did you come to your path? Any aha moments or key teachers?

I was born to spiritual parents in a community where singing together was a very important part of life. So even though I went on my own path as a young person, I never strayed too far from the path of spiritual song and chanting.

What books are you currently reading?

Never have been much of a reader, but I love observing nature and especially right now the redwood forests after the rains is my favorite chapter…

What do you like about presenting at the ashram?

I think what surprised me the most as a diverse spiritual singer not necessarily focused on kirtan, was people’s openness at the ashram to different languages, songs, and forms of expression within the divine focus and spiritual genre. I came expecting to stick to more mantra chanting, but I realized people really appreciated and honored the diversity of spiritual expression. Thank you!

Shimshai is an international performing artist who draws his inspiration from many genres including reggae, folk, and sacred traditional music. He performs his unique sound of world spiritual music on guitar and other strings, piano, flute, and woodwinds. A festival favorite, Shimshai performs around the world, either solo or with a full band. Shimshai has shared the stage with Michael Franti, Mickey Hart, Jai Uttal, Snatam Kaur, Wah, Ram Dass, and many other acclaimed musicians and visionaries around the globe.
